Raw Feeding 101 - All You Need To Know To Get Started on a Raw Diet

A beginner’s guide to feeding raw - the Luna way.

At Luna RAW Co., we believe dogs thrive when they eat real, whole foods - just like nature intended. But switching to raw can feel overwhelming. Don’t worry - we’ve made it easy.

Below you will find FAQ's about starting to feed raw.

What Is Raw Feeding?

Raw feeding means giving your dog uncooked, unprocessed food — typically a combination of:

  • Raw meat (muscle)

  • Organs

  • Optional fruits and vegetables

  • Occasional bones (for advanced feeders)

It mimics what dogs would eat in the wild — without preservatives, fillers, or artificial additives.

🧊 Why Frozen & Pre-Portioned?

Raw food must be stored cold to stay safe and fresh. That’s why we:

  • Portion each meal into ¼, ½, or 1 lb blocks

  • Deliver it frozen, directly to your door

  • Make it easy to thaw, serve, or feed frozen

❄️ Can I Feed Luna RAW Frozen — Without Thawing?

Yes — and in many cases, it’s actually beneficial!

Feeding frozen blocks straight from the freezer is a safe and enriching option for most dogs.

🧊 Benefits of Feeding Frozen:

  • 🦷 Dental health: Slows down chewing, naturally cleans teeth

  • 🧠 Mental stimulation: Keeps your pup focused and satisfied

  • ❄️ Soothing: Great for teething puppies or dogs with anxiety

  • 🕒 Convenience: Skip thawing when you're in a rush

  • 🐢 Slow feeding: Prevents gulping and encourages mindful eating

Always supervise your dog while feeding frozen, especially small breeds or puppies.

🍽 How Much Should I Feed?

A general rule of thumb:

Dog Type Daily Amount
Puppies (2–6 months) 8–10% of body weight per day
Adults (1 year+) 2–3% of ideal body weight
Seniors / Less Active 1.5–2% of ideal body weight

📝 Example:
A 25 lb adult dog = 0.5–0.75 lb of food per day
(1–1.5 blocks if using ½ lb sizes)

🧼 Safe Handling Guidelines

  • Thaw overnight in the fridge (or feed frozen)

  • Use a stainless steel bowl (dishwasher-safe recommended)

  • Wash hands, surfaces, and bowls after use

  • Store in freezer until ready to use

🥗 Can I Add Fruits & Veggies?

Yes! Luna blocks can be topped with fresh, simple foods from home:

  • 🫐 Blueberries

  • 🥬 Lightly steamed kale or spinach

  • 🍠 Cooked sweet potato or pumpkin

  • 🥚 Raw or soft-boiled egg

  • 🥕 Finely shredded carrots

Introduce slowly, one ingredient at a time.

Transitioning from Kibble

Ease your dog into raw in 5–7 days:

  1. Day 1–2: 25% raw + 75% kibble

  2. Day 3–4: 50/50

  3. Day 5–6: 75% raw

  4. Day 7+: Full raw

Mild detox symptoms like soft stool or shedding are normal.

Will feeding raw make my dog aggressive?

Absolutely not.
This is a common myth and there's no evidence that feeding a raw diet causes aggression.

Dogs may actually become more excited around real food (just like they might when you’re eating steak!), but that’s a sign of healthy appetite, not aggression. In fact, many pet parents report their dogs become calmer, more focused, and more satisfied after switching to raw this is all thanks to better digestion and blood sugar regulation.

Raw food affects behavior in a good way — not by making dogs “wild,” but by giving them what their body craves naturally.

Isn’t raw meat dangerous because of bacteria?

Great question — and one we take seriously.

Dogs’ digestive systems are built to handle raw meat. Their short, acidic digestive tract is designed to break down bacteria that would harm humans. As long as raw food is stored and handled properly, it's completely safe for dogs.

Here’s how we keep it safe:

  • All food is delivered frozen and should be stored in your freezer

  • Use stainless steel bowls and clean with hot soapy water after each meal

  • Wash your hands and surfaces — just like when preparing your own meat

🧼 Think of raw dog food like prepping chicken for dinner — with basic hygiene, it’s 100% safe.
